Recreating Amazing Fantasy 15 Cover

Recently after doing a signing at Excellent Adventures comic shop, I was asked to do a drawing of Spiderman. A family I had met, contacted me about doing a commission, a birthday gift for their big Spiderman fan.

I suggested the most iconic Spiderman image, the cover of Amazing Fantasy 15. Everybody who knows Spiderman knows Amazing Fantasy 15. The client agreed and we set about creating the art.

After light boxing the rough on a heavy 11x17 inch bristol board, I sketched in the additional characters in the scene using the photos provided.

Checking in to make sure the likeness was good, and the content worked, when we were good to go, we personalized the dialog.

Using my refillable Japanese sumi-e brush, I began to ink my 11x17 pencils.

I had been doing a lot of pencil art lately, but nothing ink on paper. I used a 2 and 6B pencil.

Filling in blacks.

As you can see, I am not a light-handed artist. I like to mess up the paper, lots of erasing. I chose not to use a blue line pencil this time.

Using a ruler for the straight edges and a Fiber-Castell fixed point medium-edge ink marker, I add the buildings and the webbing.

Dad’s All Star’s and a bow add more personalization.

Time to clean up my pencils using Dr. Martin's Bleed Proof White, and a few touches to make this my own unique take on the iconic cover
The finished art is cleaned up, and ready to be framed.

I waited till after the birthday to post anything on the socials, just in case. I don’t do a lot of commissions, so this was a fun challenge to get off the computer and draw some 2D art.

A Happy Birthday to all involved, my own included in March.

Cheers.
