One of the great things about working on several books at once is the ability to move back and forth from different projects, or simply put, to wear many hats. Illustration, storytelling, coloring, and graphic design are all a part of the larger picture but have a profound effect on the overall outcome.
So after spending several weeks doing design work, when the time came to color the cover for the second issue of Dr. Korvus, I was eager to change to my coloring hat.
Dr. Korvus is the brainchild of writer Eric Stanway, set in Victorian England, the doctor is a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Captain Kronos vampire hunter. It does not hurt that I really, really like Jeff Bonivert’s art. It can be a lot of fun to play in someone else’s sandbox for a little while and can add a different perspective when I come back to my own art.
I posted some of the processes for the coloring for the first issue a few months ago. For the second issue, I wanted to take the colors in a different direction. the first issue used a lot of blues. I wanted this one to be more earthy, with a dirtier look to England. I wanted the second issue to stand apart from the first issue.
Here are some of the highlights of the second issue cover coloring process.
I wanted the colors earthy, with a dirtier grimy look to England, to make the second issue stand apart.
Dr. Korvus#1 is available in March from FantaCo for pre-order through finer comic emporiums.
Keep creating,
Nice work Jim!
