I spend a lot of time creating my own comic stories, but every so often, I like to step outside of my own sandbox and play with someone else’s toys. I can be fun and expand my creativity by stepping out of my comfort zone for a while.
So for a short story, I reached out to my old English writer mate, Noel Hannan. In the 1990s Noel was generating a huge amount of comics, including the original Night of the Living Dead with Rik Rawling for FantaCo. I like to think that we contributed in some small way to the 90’s black and-white implosion, but that is a story best saved for another day. We reconnected over the past few months with Rik Rawling contributing Shriek covers, …
…and me begging Noel to send me a story. Noel was kind enough to send me a five-page short story, “Eve of War,” and let me go to town with it.
The story.
The Imperium’s War Marshal prepares for war and ties up loose ends with a subordinate but with a bit of a twist.
Five pages of conversation between two characters set in space? Mmnn.
Challenge accepted.
Let’s dive in.
Part 1: The Characters.
Noel's script requires two characters: the War Marshall, dressed in military robes and refinement, and the Sergeant, battle-worn and in full gear. They should appear brutish and war-like.
The Sergeant
The War Marshal
These are initial sketches, but I have a foundation to refine the characters as I progress through the story.
Next: breaking down the Eve of War story.
Also in the Studio…
Dr. Korvus #3 is now available in shops. I had the privilege to color Jeff Bonivert's covers for all four issues of this series. You can purchase it from your local comic book store or order it from Fantaco.
Check it out.
